The three essentials of eating right

On your road to a healthy and strong body remember the three essential ideas emphasized by the food guide pyramid -  variety, balance and moderation.

Variety
Since no one food supplies all the nutrients your body needs, you should eat different foods from each of the five basic groups.  Even foods within a given group provide different vitamins and minerals, as well as different caloric value. By eating a variety of foods, you will assure that your nutritional needs are met and you’ll find that buying, preparing and eating food becomes even more pleasurable than initially thought.

Balance
Eat appropriate amounts of food from each of the five basic groups – enough, but not too much.  A balanced diet supplies the nutrients and calories the body needs.  The number of servings from each group, plus how much you and your family will need, is based on age, gender and level of activity.

Moderation
By eating in moderation, you will be able to maintain a healthy weight that can protect you from health problems such as heart disease and cancer.  Additionally, you will have more flexibility to enjoy a variety of foods, including your favorites.

Eating healthy means reaching your goals. Keep it up.
